Even yet more henna!
At last, I got to do [info]grf's mehndi last Saturday, the day after the henna party - he chose a similar Native American design to the bits I used to create my most recent hand piece.

Here it is right after application -

037

And here it is 24 hours later -

henna 6-30-08 001

And here it is 48 hours after application, with my hand as a comparison in color depth.

henna 6-30-08 003

This is a really good illustration of the basic mehndi principle of color depth = skin depth + skin temperature. The skin on your palms is thicker and hotter than the skin anywhere else on your body (other than the soles of the feet,)and therefore will have much better, deeper, darker color than anywhere else on your body. The back, however, has much thinner and cooler skin, leading to a lighter color depth.

Oh, and speaking of backs, SII stopped by to show me how her peacock turned out.

henna 002

There are a few speckles here and there, from the crumbly dry bits of henna getting stuck to her skin and re-hydrating with sweat while she slept, but overall it's a lovely piece, and I'm very proud of it.

Tomorrow, [info]serpentseye's Egyptian-themed Pride mehndi!

Thank you very much! I'm sure there will me a next time. I usually have some henna paste frozen, and I just might be persuaded from time to time to do a piece at a party...

Stupid question time - how long will that last or does it depend on where you put it? The first time you sleep in it, will it come off on your clothes/sheets or is it more gradual than that?

Largely, it depends on where the design is; since it's a stain, it wears off as your skin exfoliates. If you sleep with the DRIED henna paste still adhered to your skin, you run the risk of what happened here - she slept with the paste still on, and little bits crumbled off and got trapped in the gauze covering the design. The bits rehydrated from sweat, giving them a chance to re-adhere and impart the last dregs of the stain to the skin. It can be avoided, but I haven't gotten around to experimenting with the various ideas I've had about it. If you do leave the paste on, you get a much better color, but you do possibly get henna crumbs on your bed. I've never noticed it staining my sheets in any big way, but I usually have old sheets on my bed anyway.
