| Welcome to a Dance! Filter - My history to date. |
[Apr. 6th, 2009|12:58 pm] |
So, I've finally decided it's time to talk about my vision of dance as an art form, and how it has changed recently.
This is a pretty big step for me. I've been dancing since I was six, and I've got a lot of experience in a lot of facets of dance, but I never would have labeled myself "dancer" until a few years ago.
There's a lot going on, and and I'd like to both express my private thoughts on the subject and get outside input on my perspective.
To that end, I've created a Dance! Filter, wherein I shall post about such things that strike my interest about dance in my specific, and dance as a whole. If you click on the link above, and it doesn't re-direct you to my welcome post, and you think it should, please a leave a comment below explaining why you think it should. Comments are screened. |

| April 29 is Dance Day! |
[Feb. 4th, 2008|06:07 pm] |
shanmonster reminded me about... Dance Day preparations!
On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts.
Object
The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Special emphasis should be given to addressing a “new” public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.
Events
Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door courses, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows etc.
Organizers
Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.
Content
Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.
Make sure that you include general information on the art of dance, its history, its importance to society, its universal character. This can be done in a short speech, a note in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the event different from dance activities taking place any other day.
Read a message from a prominent personality, a poem, a passage from a text by a famous author.
Coordination
In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.
It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.
Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day.
Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not normally attend dance events.
Location
At best, events should take place in “new” places, such as streets, parks, squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc.
By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event dedicated to the universal family of dancers. |

Hey, how many of you here have a dance/performance name? How did you choose one? Did you choose a name that exemplified your attitude/persona as a dancer/performer, or as yourself? What does your name mean to you? Any websites (besides shira.net) that you could recommend for name books?
My new troupe apparently likes me a lot! Last class, the line leader/second-in-command/ loraleibunny handed me a large sheaf of paper. It was their "name bible," a collection of Middle Eastern/Indian/etc. dancer's names. Most of the troupe had picked their names from there. She asked me to choose a dancer's name for myself. (Yay!) Now, I've always been bad about this. (I got into a lot of arguments in the SCA because I didn't want a "character name.") I could use my real name, Rebecca, and change the spelling to the orginal Hebrew version. It would be correct, I suppose, but it doesn't feel inspired, somehow. I really like water and wind imagery, and anything with celestial bodies or light.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them!

Jax has his Squirrelly and Ditko has his Fishie.
Woe betide you if you try to steal the fishie. Much Shih-Tzu bitchiness will follow. On the other hand Jax loves to share his damp, beloved squirrel, especially if you're trying to read or do the crossword.
Dance class tonight was great, but since i'm sick, I'm a lot more tired and sore than I would be normally. Well, that and the weather change. Damn it be cold and windy in Cleveoh today. Watching the troupe run through their sets for the upcoming show was cool They're really pulling together. I got shanghied into being a dresser for the show. So, I'll be watching what I can from the wings. Much as I'd like to watch them perform, they need my help. Besides, I get to watch every Friday night, and I'm sure someone will be recording it somehow.
(*Ding!*) habari and loraleibunny do you plan on recording this? Did you want to? Need an extra camera? I could lay my hands on one and an operator. (*lightbulb clicks off*)
I had another lightbulb moment on the way up the stairs to the studio. . o O (Why are dance studios always up at least one flight of stairs?) If all the girls in the troupe want to, they could all chip in for supplies and I could henna them a few days before the show. Bonuses: They get neato-keen henna for the show & I get pix for a portfolio. I will now spend a couple hours surfing the henna webs. *fingers are getting itchy*
Edit: I have no idea why some links and lj stuff is working and why some isn't. I point the lil arrow and I clicky the button. |

So, the new scarf... I wanted to show everyone what it looks like, but it seemed a little silly to just throw it on over jeans or whatever. Now, being a novice bellydancer, I don't have much in the way of costumes. I threw together some stuff from my closet and put some makeup on (*gasp!* no, not makeup!!) and got <lj user="zodarzone"> to take some pix.

Well, I'm not nearly as sick as I want to be. I feel much better today than I did yesterday (Thank you for the good wishes!) and that really pisses me off. Ya see, I was hoping I'd get reallyreally supersick.
I know, I know, that sounds very weird. But wait, it will all be clear to you soon. I want to quit smoking. I know the ciggies are horrible for me, my family does carry a tendency towards cancer, and if I's truly serious about dancing, I need the full range of my lungs. The last time I got reallyreally sick (ask moominmuppet ) I had a fever of 104 for about four days. Scared Jax to no end, me laying around all weak and wheezy and delerious. When the fever broke, I realized I hadn't smoked since before the sickness, and decided to not pick it up again. That lasted for four months or so, till some stoopid jackass at my previous job got me hooked again. So, I was hoping to get sick again, making quitting a hell of a lot easier.
But I'm not. Bah. It's going to be a lot harder this way.
In other news.... I got my belated Xmazz prezzies from musicalchaos! A lovely new hip scarf (perhaps I'll post pix if anyone wants to see) and Rachel Brice's Tribal Fusion Belly Dance on DVD. I'm soooooooooooo happy. The hip scarf is beautiful, well-made, and big enough to wrap and tie! Hey, does anyone know why the BDSS DVDs won't play in my DVD player, but will play on the PS2? I'm really confused by this.

Last night I joined habari for her Middle Eastern dance class. It was great. The night got off to a slightly odd start when I stepped up the door. The girl who was opening the studio turned out to be a classmate of mine from high school. Boy, they just pop right out of the woodwork around me, huh? Way back when, her mother taught me how to hula for our drama troupe's production of South Pacific. Now, twelve years later, her mother is going to teach me how to belly dance. How very odd. I should definitely go to beginner's class. Paula uses a different terminology for the dance then I'm used to, and since she trained with a Lebanese dancer, her style is a bit different then what I was learning before. I do need to get a better hip scarf, however. The one I have is very light, and not really big enough to circle my hips comfortably. I prefered the heavier weight of a beaded and coined hip scarf, more like the ones I used to dance with. Maybe that's one of the things muscialchaos will get me for belated Xmazz. I hope my knees can take it. I do want to dance with this group, but they emphasize floor work and highly recommend getting knee pads. Well, I'll definitely do that, but I'm not even sure if my joints can manage it right now. Perhaps as summer comes along and I loosen up, I can work more in that direction. I felt kind of clunky and out of step, trying to keep up with the piece that the intermediate group was working on. I don't feel I danced very well. I didn't warm up, and that does make a difference for me. Also, it's been three months since my last lesson. I'm out of shape, and I'm grateful moominmuppet got me those dvds. That way I can work out during the week, and take class on Friday. This studio has mirrors, unlike my previous studio, so every time I caught a glimpse of myself I got thrown off. How I actually look is vastly divergent from how I thought I looked. I knew I get hot and sweaty, but it's entirely different to see yourself bright red and gleaming. Things I thought I did well came out looking forced and gawky. I guess I got used to dancing by feel, not by look. I am looking forward to classes, though, don't get me wrong. They start you on zils right away, unlike my previous instructor. (I spent a half hour or so this afternoon adjusting my zils to fit my fingers tightly and sewing the elastic down. A loose zil is a danger to everyone, especially the folks in the front row.) She also has us dance a "friends and family" recital every year, which makes me feel like we've actually got a goal.
habari is a beautiful dancer, even in practice. She's definitely got the hips for it, and she really lets herself relax and feel the dance. It's much more engaging to watch someone who truly dances with their heart as well as their body. |
